Norma M. Schwebel

Mrs. Norma M. Schwebel, age 87, passed away on Monday, November 26, at her home in Pinckneyville. She enjoyed good health until an illness earlier this year, but recovered and was active until her death.
Norma was born on April 10, 1914, in Bloomsdale, Mo. to Lawrence and Lilly Mae Schilly. She spent her early years in Weiner, Ark. and was united in marriage to August (Gus) Schwebel in Ava. Ill. on Jan. 16, 1934. She lived in Southern Illinois the rest of her life, moving to Pinckneyville in 1936. For nearly half a century she owned and operated Norma's Beauty Shop in Pinckneyville, retiring in her early 80s. For many years she also assisted son Charles in operating the Schwebel Funeral Home.
She was active in St. Bruno's Catholic Church, especially in the Catholic Daughters of America of which she was a charger member. Norma had numerous interests and hobbies. She belonged to card clubs, played golf (scoring a hole-in-one at age 80) and excelled in bowling, sewing and quilting.
Norma is survived by her son Michael and his wife Myra of Jupiter, Fla.; five grandchildren, Kevin Schwebel and wife Jodie of Lac Cruces, N.M., Lisa Smith of Willisville, Michele Smith and husband Douglas of Denver, Colo., Monica Schwebel of Ormond Beach, Fla, and Michael Schwebel, Jr. of Gainesville, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Riley Smith of Denver and Levi Smith of Willisville; one sister, Alma Hess of Wynne, Ark.; six brothers, Archie Schilly and wife Dorothy of Ocala, Fla., Aloysisus Schilly of Bloomsdale, Mo., Elmer Schilly of Jonesboro, Ark., Francis Schilly and wife Helen of Festus, Mo., Louis Schilly and wife Anita of Bloomsdale, Mo., and Lawrence (Junior) Schilly and wife Shirley of French Village, Mo.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son Charles and three brothers as well as special friend Donna Hardwick of Chester, Ill.
Visitation was at St. bruno's Catholic Church Friday evening, Nov. 30 from 5 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Bruno's Saturday, dec. 1 at 10 a.m. with Rev. John Venegoni officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the St. Bruno Catholic Church or the Cemetery Fune.
Maxton Funeral Home of Du Quoin was in charge of the arrangments.
